National

Distillery

Helping an emerging craft distillery to find their unique voice and stand out on the worldstage.

About

I was introduced to Blair and Ricardo, founders of National Distillery, via a product development consultation at Alembics. I worked directly with National Distillery on strategy, brand identity and story to create three uniquely different craft gin labels that would stand out in a competitive international market.

Approach

National Distillery had clear ideas and preferences about the personality of the brands they wanted to create and their corresponding audiences. What they needed was a storyteller—someone who could take their bold, 360-degree outlook and turn it into a marketable product that was true-to their vision. With headquarters in the former National Tobacco Company in Napier, National Distillery had an abundance of opulent heritage to draw on. I travelled to Napier and worked on a long-form brand story to inform themes and design directions for the mothership National Distillery brand and created naming concepts and brand identity stories for four of their five spirit labels.

Result

National Distillery’s flagship gin labels, Verdigris and Adorn, have since won numerous international awards and National Distillery has been voted best new distillery by a renowned New York lifestyle magazine.
